"My conceptual Mixed
Media work is an expression of both - my artistic and mathematical mind and
depicts a strong procedural content: Graph theory and the correlation of
geometrical objects. My visual compositions are artistic and rhythmical
expressions of forms and shapes created with a mathematical background.”
I was born and grew up in Berlin, Germany, and was interested in non-objective
art since early childhood. At the age of ten, I experimented with collage for
the first time rescuing old pile Magazines my mother used to throw away, not
able to stand the thought of wasting wonderful sources of inspirations and
endless creative possibilities. When the time came to decide on a career path,
however, I neglected my artistic ambitions and choose the "secure" path in life
to follow another strong interest – science. After studying Information
Technology in my native Germany and working as a process engineer for several
years, however, I felt something was missing and it was then I realized being an
artist is a necessity rather a decision one makes. Shortly after, I changed my
life and continents, moved to Atlanta, U.S. and began to pursue my artistic
ambitions. During my studies at the Art Institute of Atlanta, I fell in love
with the city and stayed after Graduation.
I was still torn between my artistic and scientific approach to life until I
finally realized they are not exclusive and at this point I started to become a
conscious artist. As a consequence my work is an outlet for both, my artistic as
well as mathematical mind. My two-dimensional collages consist of complex graphs
and nets such as multi, pseudo, loops and planar graphs (just to name a few) and
geometrical shapes which are combined with a strong sense of balance and
symmetry. Using my knowledge of graph attributes I create dynamic collage
patterns based on aspects of adjacencies, edges, vertex, node constellation and
degrees to layer, step by step, often hundreds of pieces of fabric, paper, metal
and found objects to one, final piece. The so created shapes have a signature
look - spherical, almost organically figures emerge with strong expressions of
Serenity, rhythm and movement. To reconnect with my process oriented and
analytical side, I frequently explore electronic media to create digital
collages using my mixed media work transforming it via photographic and digital
means into digital artwork often consisting of hundreds and hundreds of
electronically altered collage layers.
What most fascinates me in creating art is to be able to combine the two areas
that I am equally drawn to - science and art. The fact that science can be
beautiful and art can be based on scientific laws is a never ending, inspiring
process to me. I explore a variety of media like Acrylics, Aquarelle, Monotypes
and Pencils that are applied to Canvas, self prepared Mixed Media surfaces and
Paper and Digital Media to create my collage material. My work resides in
private collections throughout Europe and the United States and garnered prizes
in exhibition".
